Somalia’s National Electoral Commission announces provisional voter registration list for Banadir region

Mogadishu- The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) of Somalia has on Sunday officially released the provisional voter registration list for the Banadir region during a ceremony held at the Commission’s headquarters in Mogadishu.
The event was attended by senior officials from the NIEC, including its Chairperson Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, the Governor of Banadir region, leaders of political parties, representatives of the Supreme Council of Somali Scholars, members of civil society organizations, and other dignitaries.
During the ceremony, the Commission announced that a total of 923,220 citizens had registered to vote during the voter registration exercise in the Banadir region.
This figure reflects significant public participation and marks a major milestone in Somalia’s ongoing democratic process.
In his remarks, Chairperson Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan commended the cooperation between government institutions, local authorities, and the public throughout the registration period.
He emphasized the importance of citizen participation in shaping the future of their communities through peaceful and transparent elections.
The Chairperson further confirmed that local council elections in Banadir’s districts are scheduled to take place on November 30, 2025, where residents will cast their votes to elect members of their respective district councils.
The NIEC encouraged all registered voters to review the provisional voter list carefully to ensure the accuracy of their information before the final list is released.
The Commission also urged citizens who may have missed the registration period to prepare for future electoral exercises and stay engaged in the country’s democratic development.
